Eostre (or Ēostre) is an Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, dawn, and fertility, whose name is widely believed to be the origin of the word ‘Easter’. Associated with the vernal equinox, she represents renewal, new life, and the return of light after winter. She is often linked to symbols of fertility, specifically the hare (representing the Easter bunny) and eggs.
Hot cross buns date back to pagan Anglo-Saxon times, where they honoured the goddess Eostre. They became popular in England as a Good Friday treat by the 18th century. They are spiced, fruit-filled sweet buns marked with a cross, traditionally eaten on Good Friday to mark the end of Lent.
Our Eostre bars are inspired by the delicious flavours of hot cross buns. The hot cross spices subtly flavour our rich cacao mix with bursts of sweetness from the apricots, zingy barberries and crunch from the almonds.
